Internet Publishing means delivering the right content to the right reader with the right revenue generation. The content brings the reader, so iProduction removes obstacles between editorial and the effective servicing of the reader’s needs.

Publish: Manage editorial content

iProduction's editorial management empowers publishers to execute content strategy with features that deliver and manage content with ease and flexibility. The publisher controls the content, the media, and the format in which it will be presented, as well as how it will reach the readers.

Issues

iProduction supports issues based on print editions with many familiar features from the print world, such as images and captions. As in print, this is a collection of articles released simultaneously as a single entity. This allows the web to leverage the print edition, even as the online version develops a brand of its own.

News

The Breaking News module allows editorial to embrace the “Web-First Publication” philosophy. Individual articles are published on the web site independent of the issue-based schedule. These articles feed “most recent article” sections, keeping the web site content current.

The content can be announced in a news alert e-newsletter, allowing readers to keep current on topics of special interest. The content can also be made available through an RSS feed.

Taxonomy

Editorial taxonomy is the categorization of content, for example; sections, departments, and columns. The editorial taxonomy ensures that content is presented in a structure that is useful and familiar to readers. iProduction structures content with a hierarchy of indexes defined by the editorial taxonomy (including category, topic, subtopic, and media type). Content can be automatically populated in sections based on taxonomy. Taxonomy can be used to drive targeted advertising, form the basis for navigation, help narrow search, and improve search engine optimization.

Related Items

The Related Items feature places a list of items the reader may find interesting on an article detail page. The list is automatically constructed using the most current articles from editorial taxonomy associated with the article or channel. This is supported for all types of content – articles, white papers, podcasts, videos, and web seminars. iProduction also has a feature to associate specific editorially-selected articles, white papers, podcasts, videos, or free-form content with another article.

Additional Features

iProduction includes standard Internet publishing features such as keywords, navigation, topics, RSS, and sitemap. In addition to navigation based on taxonomy, site search is implemented with standard Google-style default searching and complex Boolean searches. iProduction uses the Texis search engine, which is used on eBay and Dow Jones.

Media

Different types of media – from video to PDFs – are handled as easily as traditional articles. iProduction uses special templates to give the appropriate presentation for podcasts, video, white papers, research reports and more. Each type of media can be restricted to paid access or connected to lead generation for advertiser sponsorships.

e-Newsletters

E-newsletters are critical in developing a regular frequency controlled circulation interaction with subscribers. They provide a key advertising platform that is the foundation for Internet revenues. The complete iProduction solution includes integration with editorial management, browser-operated applications, and bounce-handling systems. The e-newsletter system provides reports that show e-mail deliveries, opens, bounces, and headline clicks with available promotion codes, tracking numbers, and other source identifiers for reporting.

The e-mail alerts and e-newsletters are governed by templates that provide the ability for editors to select content, insert free form content, or free form the entire message. The e-mail templates are connected to the ad delivery system so that ad placement can be managed by the advertising server rather than by hand. This provides for integrated ad reporting, fewer errors in creating ad links, pre-scheduling of ads in e-newsletters, e-newsletter ad inventory management, and re-use of ad copy.

In the online world, the focus of circulation is shifting toward building branded e-mail-based publications. Links from the editorial e-mail will bring readers to web pages. E-newsletters can be used with Breaking News, Issues, Blogs, White papers, Web seminars, and Events.

Blogs

iProduction supports community interaction with blogs, including author and index pages for the blog author as well as posts and reader comments. Blogs can be a powerful way to increase site registration and e-newsletter opt-ins. The blog feature is compatible with the “blogosphere,” with support for trackbacks, permalinks, and tools like Digg and RSS.

Arming for the Internet Publishing Wars

If the Internet is all about content, magazine publishers should logically have had a head start on everyone else in the race to online success. The problem is that the systems publishers have traditionally used for distributing content, establishing relationships with an audience, and financially supporting their operations evolved in and for the world of paper-based publishing.
